Brief Description
Step up to a leadership role in infection prevention and control practice in health and social care settings with UL’s Master of Science in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Leadership.
The programme supports students in developing the leadership, governance and clinical decision-making skills required to respond to evolving public health challenges.
Graduates will be prepared to champion IPC practice and contribute to innovation and quality improvement in complex healthcare environments.
The blended learning programme, taught on campus and online and is taken on a part-time basis over two years.
During this programme, you will:
- Gain advanced knowledge in IPC models, microbiological and epidemiological strategies, clinical governance, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
- Develop the knowledge to support the development and implementation of infection prevention and control strategies in a variety of healthcare settings.
- Critically explore models, principles and standards underpinning infection prevention and control (IPC) practice.
- Learn from and with professionals in nursing, medicine, public health and allied health fields.

- Undertake six modules in Year 1, including two specialist modules in infection prevention and control.
- Option to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Infection Prevention and Control Leadership after Year 1
- Students who achieve a minimum QCA grade of 2.00 at the end of year one may progress to undertake the second year for the MSc award.
- Complete an evidence synthesis, in year two.
- Modules with (M) beside them can be taken as independent micro-credential

Year 1
Autumn Semester
- Infection Prevention and Control in Healthcare (M) (NS6302) explores principles and standards underpinning infection prevention and control practice.
- Health Research Methods/Methodology (M) (NS6036) develops an understanding of the social, political, ethical and personal context of the research process.
- Principles of Primary and Community Care (M) (NS6034) explores the principles of primary and community care in a dynamic healthcare environment.
Spring Semester
- Leading and Managing Infection Prevention and Control (M) (NS6192) provides the knowledge to support the development and implementation of infection prevention and control strategies and programmes.
- Promoting Quality and Safety in Healthcare (M) (NS6038) explores the concept of quality and safety in healthcare in promoting quality patient outcomes.
- Health Promotion in Healthcare Practice (M) (NS6502) provides knowledge and skills to critically appraise and develop as a practitioner in health promotion in healthcare practice.
Year 2
Autumn Semester
- Dissertation 1 (NS6004) facilitates students to conduct an evidence synthesis. First of two modules.
Spring Semester
- Dissertation 2 (NS6005) facilitates students to complete an evidence synthesis. Second of two modules.
Books and journal articles needed for the programme will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in an approved equivalent qualification.
- Applicants must hold a recognised health-related professional qualification.
- Applicants must hold current professional registration with their relevant regulatory professional body.
- The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview.
