The Bernal Structure

The Bernal Institute is defined by its iconic crystalline cube structure, a distinctive symbol of precision and innovation, mounted on the building’s façade at  University of Limerick. The cube represents the unit cell, the fundamental building block of crystalline materials, and the legacy of Irish scientist, JD Bernal, the institute's namesake.

The cube structure is made up of four transformative research pillars: Advanced Enabling Technologies, Energy Research, Bio³ (Pharma, Sciences and Engineering), and Resilient and Sustainable Materials.

Each pillar is powered by world-class academic leaders and experts, renowned for their contributions to science and engineering. Our academic leaders within the Bernal Institute are the link for discovery and impact, where collaboration and cutting-edge innovation pave the way to a sustainable future.
